MISSION
The mission of the Capital Teaching Residency (CTR) is to increase the number of highly effective educators in the District of Columbia by training aspiring teachers through an intensive one-year residency in a high performing public charter school.

We believe that only by increasing the number of highly effective teachers can we close the achievement gap.

OVERVIEW
KIPP DC and E.L. Haynes public charter schools have joined forces to create the Capital Teaching Residency program. CTR is an intensive year-long teacher training program based in the highest performing charter schools in Washington, DC. Outstanding individuals develop into skilled educators through extensive coaching, working alongside an excellent mentor teacher, and perfecting their skills in a real classroom. As their teaching progresses, residents gradually assume more classroom responsibility.

Based on KIPP DC and E.L. Haynes’ nine years of experience and research in teacher training, residents begin their training with highly relevant coursework directly tied to the experience of leading a classroom in an urban school.  The curriculum is tightly aligned to support the residents’ year-long practicum, mentoring, and coaching.

From day one, residents are in an excellent, urban classroom working alongside their mentor teacher. Throughout the year, the residents gradually move from observing their mentor to conducting practice lessons and finally taking on considerable amounts of teaching responsibility. Residents receive continual, targeted feedback from their mentors, who provide daily input on every aspect of the residents’ teaching experience, as well as coaching from a school leader, an expert educator. Finally, graduates receive two years of alumni support to ensure success in the classroom.

WHY IT MATTERS
Youth from underserved communities in Washington, DC and across the United States deserve the opportunity to succeed and achieve. No other indicator is more strongly correlated with student achievement than teacher quality. In our nation’s capital, too many students – especially those from low-income neighborhoods – lack access to excellent teaching. As a result, these students quickly fall behind, making it nearly impossible to catch up.

There is a dire need for highly effective teachers in Washington DC. The Capital Teaching Residency will meet this need and will close the achievement gap by consistently training effective teachers.

BY THE NUMBERS

90% of graduates are still teaching

Over 400 teachers will be trained by 2015
