Research shows that high-quality teachers have the most direct impact on student success.  Conversely, students who have ineffective teachers for three years lose so much educational experience that they never catch up.  The need for an exceptional and diverse corps of teachers to serve not only E.L. Haynes but schools across DC is evident.  In order to meet this critical need, we have developed the E.L. Haynes Teaching Associates Program.  E.L. Haynes hires Teaching Associates to work alongside outstanding, experienced lead teachers and, through that experience and extensive professional development, gain the skills necessary to become exceptional teachers ready to serve students in schools across DC.  Since 2004, E.L. Haynes has “graduated” 23 new teachers from the Teaching Associates Program, 74% of whom have gone on to become lead teachers, specialists or administrators at E.L. Haynes or other schools in and around DC.

During their year in the program, Teaching Associates build skills with hands-on teaching experience working alongside outstanding lead teachers, inclusion teachers, and English langauge learning teachers.

In addition to three weeks of summer training and preparation, Teaching Associates engage in professional development with a Teaching Associate Coach throughout the year.  Through this structure, Teaching Associates participate in quarterly workshops, attend bi-weekly sessions, and have the opportunity to tape and reflect on videos of their work with students.

Teaching Associates also have the option of planning and teaching week-long intersession courses during school breaks for an additional stipend.

At the end of the year, Associates who have taken and passed the Praxis exam are “highly qualified” and prepared to apply for full time positions at charter schools throughout DC.  Associates may also choose to re-apply for another year as an Associate at Haynes.

Applicants to the program must have a bachelors degree, a track record of successfully working on teams, a strong work ethic, a history of working with children, and a relentless attitude toward closing the achievement gap.

E.L. Haynes is no longer accepting applications for Teaching Associates for the 2010-2011 school year. An application for the 2011-2012 school year will be posted here when it is realeased.
