KANSAS AVENUE CAMPUS For month-by-month photos of the construction of our beautiful building, visit our Photo Journal. In February 2009, E.L. Haynes was awarded the exclusive right to a long-term lease for Clark Elementary School, a former DC Public School, through a competitive city-wide process. E.L. Haynes will renovate the existing 46,000 square-foot facility, build an addition onto the site, and develop the extensive outdoor space (approximately 5 acres of property) into athletic fields, playspace, and outdoor academic space. This project is not only exciting because it allows E.L. Haynes to continue to expand through high school and to serve more students in all grades, but because it returns an important community asset to its originally-intended use; the former Clark facility will no longer be a vacant building, but will once again serve DC students. E.L. Haynes’ Kansas Avenue Campus will ultimately serve approximately 650 students and enable E.L. Haynes to achieve its mission and vision by providing space for the E.L. Haynes’ High School and for our Early Childhood Program (grades Pre-K to 2). Grades 3-8 will remain at the 3600 Georgia Avenue campus, which will serve approximately 450 students. The school plans will conduct site renovations and construction in a three-phase approach. The first phase of renovations, which will enable the school to move into the existing building, is scheduled to be complete by July 2010. This will allow grades Pre-K to 2 to move into the building for the 2010-2011 school year. Phase 2 of the renovations will include the addition of a gymnasium, a high school cafeteria, a new classroom wing, and additional parking. Phase 3 of the renovations will include a soccer field, two outdoor basketball courts, and some landscaping of the site. These additions will support all grade levels at the site as well as the sports program for 3rd – 8th graders who are housed at 3600 Georgia Avenue. |
