As the first public school in DC to use a year-round calendar, E.L. Haynes provides our students with high-quality
academic enrichment programs for 47 weeks every year. To do this, we use an innovative approach that integrates
key success elements drawn from the most current research in education reform and student achievement. Our program,
coupled with a strong culture of accountability and a focus on results, ensure the success of every student.
Key facets of our program include:
- An outstanding teacher for every student, every year.
We only hire the very best teachers at Haynes. We are a professional learning community and our
teachers continuously engage in a wide variety of professional development opportunities. In order to ensure
the availability of the highest quality teachers, we develop new exceptional teaching talent through our
Teaching Excellence fellowship program, which includes completing American University’s AQUE Certification Program.
- Extensive educational programming outside of school hours.
In addition to the mandated 1,200 hours of education that every DC student receives, our students have access to an
additional 1,000 educational hours through our before-school, after-school, and Intersession programming. Eighty
percent of our students participate in these programs. Every Title I student can attend these programs free of
charge and 96% of our Title I students do participate, ensuring that we are leveling the playing field for our
students who are most at-risk.
- A data-driven program.
Through ongoing student assessments and carefully-developed systems, we track and promote growth for every one of
our students. Because of this rigorous attention to the data and its impact on how we teach each student, we can
ensure that every student succeeds and will be ready to attend the college of his or her choice upon graduation
from Haynes.
