The E.L. Haynes Reading Challenge:
The 3 Million Minute Mountain

This year, students at E.L. Haynes have set a mountainous goal: to spend 3 million minutes reading! Each student will track his or her daily reading in a reading log and will have a Reading Guide — an older sibling, parent, grandparent, aunt, uncle, cousin, or E.L. Haynes staff member who will check in with the student every day and devote time to reading with him or her each week.

Students logged minutes at a recent "All School Meeting," when they all pulled out their books and read quietly for two straight minutes. In just the first few weeks of school, our readers have already read nearly 450,000 minutes!

Update 12/19/07 - 1,459,459 minutes!
Update 2/4/08 - 2,087,048 minutes!
Update 4/2/08 - Our students have already surpassed the 3,000,000 minute goal. Now they are trying to reach 4,000,000 by the end of the year!
Update 11/15/08 - Our students surpassed 4,000,000 minutes by the end of last year. Our goal for this year is 5,000,000!
