![]() Myths and Fables The fourth grade has been exploring different genres of writing, from myths to tall tales. Students learned how fables were often told to teach a lesson or moral and that myths were often told to explain the origin of things. Using Pecos Bill as an example, students contrasted the features of a folk tale and those of a tall tale. For instance, a folk tale tells a story about a culture and often tells about a first for a culture while a tall tale features a main character with extraordinary, exaggerated abilities. They also discussed The Rough-Face Girl By Rafe Martin, which retells an Algonquin folktale. After all of their reading and examination of the various genres, students had a chance to choose a genre and write one of their own. Below are five of the stories they created. Tasneem - "The Journey" One day the great monster Acheles was stomping through the beautiful fields of heaven. Nala the nymph told Alicia the goddess of the wind that he was wrecking the gardens. Alicia hurried to the grassy fields and spotted the terrible monster. Once he spotted her he ran towards her and Nala. She didn’t want Nala or herself to get hurt so she cast a spell on Acheles and his feet stuck to the ground and rotted. His skin turned into hard rough brown flakes and his hair turned all green. The mighty tree was born. Gasping at their success, Alicia froze the rest of his body so he can only be moved by her and otherwise will be frozen for all of eternity. The end!
Maya - "Goddess of Earth " Once in the land of Tridenthia were nymphs, faeries, princes and princesses, Kings and queens and cyclopes live, Nahla the earth goddess was making sure that all the crops and plants were nurtured correctly and that the spring rains fell. At that moment Nahla saw a handsome young warrior named Acylese who had just fought in battle (and won). Nahla instantly she fell in love with him and said to herself for she was high in the mountains where no one could hear her, “Aaahhh.” But she didn’t know that the spring rain hadn’t fell yet and that Pousi, the wise keep of gifts was watching her. Long ago when Nahla was given her gift to be goddess of earth she made a commitment to Pousi that she would never get distracted from her workings. Then when Nahla was done gazing at Acylese, Pousi came to her and said in a low voice, “You have broken my commitment, you must be punished.” With that she now was a mere mortal. Nahla blamed being distracted by her mortaled sister Angelina, who was kind, talented and beautiful, because she was always jealous of her. Even though Pousi knew that Nahla was distracted by the warrior he had an idea to consider Angelina to be goddess of earth, but when Nahla found out about it she was furious. She thought to destroy her but she was protected by Pousi for he was the most powerful god of all. Pousi sentenced Nahla to the underworld and from then on she was called “The Evil Ex-goddess of the Underworld. Marcuss - "How Volcanoes Were Made " The God of Fire was enemies with Posiden. Posidon threw a water ball at the God of Fire. He yelled in pain “AAAAAWWWWW!!!” Then he made a huge fireball. It was so strong it broke apart in the air. Posiden ran to the sea. The fireball landed and it made steep hills with a hole where the fireball landed with it trapped inside. When the God of Fire gets mad, the fireball pops out. The end.
Inaya - "Why the Chicken Can't Fly " Rocky: I love LusyLina a lot. I wish she would marry me. So what could I do to make her love me? [Rocky noticed Lusylina. He drank the potion but it wasn’t love potion but a controlling potion. Lusylina attacked Rambo because she saw that happen found the antidote and made Rocky drink it she cursed Rambo to be a chicken that couldn’t fly. Chickens were able to fly back then until she made that curse.]
