Hopes and Dreams

On August 3, 2009, E.L. Haynes started our sixth school year, serving 450 students in grades pre-K through seven. Many of our teachers asked students to think about their hopes and dreams for the year and begin to set goals for what they hope to learn and achieve. Below are some of the hopes and dreams that our students and teachers expressed.

Our third grade students and teachers drew their hopes and dreams for the year.

Our third grade students' hopes and dreams included:

  • "My goal this year is to learn multiplication."
  • "My goal in school is to get better at writing in cursive."
  • "My goal this year is to be an artist."
  • "My goal this year is to be a peer tutor."
  • "My goal this year is to read all the fiction books in Ms., Giles' room."
  • One third grade teacher wrote, "I hope that every member of our community feels valued and has a sense of achievement."

Each student in the dragonfly class, one of our first grade classrooms, created a dragonfly with their hopes and dreams which hangs on a mobile over their table. Some of their hopes and dreams included:

    • "I want to learn to count to 1,000."
    • "I want to meet the president."
    • "I want to learn to write math problems."
    • "I want to learn how to paint."
    • "I hope to learn about Abraham Lincoln."
    • "I want to make friends with everybody."

Each student in fourth grade created a poster of themselves as Time's person of the year and on their poster they wrote their goals for the year, which included:

    • "I want to read more books and read faster."
    • "I want to get better at helping friends"
    • "I want to get better at division."

Seventh grade students set goals for themselves as well. This year, they included:

    • "I want to be good in math and science so I can be a doctor."
    • "Read more books. Write a children's book. Write a book about my life."
    • "Improve in math. Focus. Make new friends. Grow closer to friends."
