At E.L. Haynes, we all live by our promise: Be Kind. Work Hard. Get Smart. Haynes students respect themselves, their classmates, their teachers, and their materials. They are focused and committed to doing their very best and they never give up. They are scholars, craftsmen, explorers, and scientists.

At E.L. Haynes we celebrate and learn from our differences. We believe diversity has value; that diversity — of race, gender, home language, and economic background — is the surest way to prepare students to become full-engaged and responsible citizens in a country that is itself richly diverse.

We work hard to ensure a diverse student body and staff.
In the 2009-2010 school year:

  • 54% of our students are African-American
  • 25% Latino
  • 18% Caucasian
  • 3% Asian

In addition, 62% of Haynes students qualify for free or reduced lunch and 21% are English Language Learners. While 60% of Haynes students come from Ward 1, from the neighborhoods closest to the school, we have students from every Ward in the city.
