Play, Learn, Grow: Inside the Saturday Soccer Phenomenon at Haynes

On crisp fall mornings, the fields at E.L. Haynes Elementary buzz with sounds of tiny cleats, laughter, and cheers. What started in 2021 as a simple idea has grown into a vibrant community where students of all backgrounds kick, run, and cheer each other on.

The story began with a parent, Dominique Moore, and her son, Grayson. Grayson, then in kindergarten, simply wanted more time to play with his classmates. Seeing an opportunity, Domonique, an E.L. Haynes parent and ROAR member, founded the school’s volunteer-led soccer program. Since then, the program has been a cornerstone of connection and inclusion, completely staffed by the community.

Another key player is Coach Alvin Greene. His warm, familiar face is a constant on the sidelines. Every Saturday, he is there to greet families, ensure everyone has equipment, and provide crucial behind-the-scenes support. Coach Greene goes above and beyond to make sure every family feels supported, season after season.

This free activity is open to all students from PK-3 through fifth grade, regardless of background or ability. Kids come for the sense of camaraderie and a chance to try something new and move their bodies in a low-pressure environment.

“The soccer program offers a wonderful space for students and caregivers to connect,” says Julita Blair, one of this year’s CoROARdinators. “It fosters a culture of inclusion and community engagement that enriches the entire school experience.”

The coaches use highly kinesthetic and visual training techniques, allowing students to learn and grow in the sport no matter their home language or ability. As Corey Gordon, a former lead parent, reflects, the program is a “fun, supportive, encouraging space for all students to learn, move and cheer each other on!”

The tradition continues this year thanks to dedicated parent and teacher volunteers, as well as several E.L. Haynes High School students. These older students, many with siblings in the elementary school, volunteer their time and serve as coaching assistants, earning volunteer hours while connecting with the kids on a different level. This multi-age collaboration further strengthens the community bonds that are at the heart of the program.

Saturday soccer at E.L. Haynes is providing a space for all kids to learn and grow. Anthony L., a first grader, is thrilled to be there, sharing, “Maybe I’ll love soccer for the rest of my life!”
